Sativa
Sativa strains have been cultivated throughout history by farmers around the world. This type of cannabis is known for its soaring cerebral effects, large yields, and high resistance to heat and humidity. Given the long and diverse history of this cannabis subspecies, thousands of Sativa strains are available today.
Landrace Sativas are typically found in tropical and subtropical areas such as Colombia, Thailand, and Malawi. These plants tend to grow very tall in height, forming lanky branches, thin leaflets, and fluffy flowers. The size of the plants allows them to outgrow the thick canopy of the jungle, while the open bud structure offers resistance to bud rot and other fungal infections common in wet, warm environments.
Sativas are usually high in THC and low in CBD. As a result, these strains provide uplifting and energizing effects. Cultivars such as Durban Poison and Blue Dream are known for delivering euphoric, mood-boosting effects that are ideal for alleviating stress and lethargy. Given the powerful cerebral high that these strains provide, they are very popular among recreational cannabis users.
Because this subspecies has adapted to regions with long growing seasons, the plants reach maturity slowly when compared to the Indica and Ruderalis varieties of marijuana. Sativa strains often take 14 weeks or longer to complete the flowering cycle, while some Indica and hybrid strains can reach maturity in as little as seven weeks. Fortunately, cannabis breeders have developed hybrid strains that offer the cerebral effects of Sativas, with the short flowering time of Indicas.
