The term “S1” means “first selfed generation.” Selfing is the process of crossing a plant to itself to make feminized seeds. This can be accomplished by using an ethylene-blocking spray such as colloidal silver to cause the mother plant to form pollen sacs. The pollen is then used to pollinate either the original mother plant or a clone of it.
When done correctly, selfing produces 100 percent feminized cannabis seeds with the same genotype as the mother plant. This allows growers to discover plants that are nearly identical to the original clone. It also serves to open the gene pool, producing rare phenotypes with recessive traits. When growing S1 seeds, you may even find some phenotypes that are better than the original mother.
For breeders, selfing is a quick, easy, and effective way to stabilize a strain. Rather than selectively breeding males and females for many generations, they can create a homozygous strain in just a few generations of selfing.
