OG Kush Strain
OG Kush is a legendary strain that is often considered to be the best of the best. This Indica-dominant hybrid is known for its stellar resin production, and amazing flavor. The OG Kush cannabis strain is one cultivar that has stood the test of time and won’t disappear anytime soon.
OG Kush Strain History
The tale of OG Kush began in the early 1990s when Alec Anderson, a grower in Florida, bought an ounce of a strain known as “Krippy.” Alec discovered some seeds in the batch of Krippy and germinated them.
When the seeds started to flower, he noticed that they had a unique look with leaves that were broad and extremely dark green. Alec gave a clone of one of the plants to his friend Matt “Bubba” Berger for safekeeping. One of Matt’s friends mentioned that the buds on the plants resembled “Kushberries,” and the Kush moniker stuck.
In the mid-1990s, Matt and his friend, Josh D, moved to Silverlake, California, to get involved in the cannabis industry in the area. Matt took a clone of Kush with him, along with a Northern Lights cut he had named “Bubba.” The Kush proved to be a big hit in California, and soon, many growers were claiming to have an authentic cut. Matt and Josh dubbed their strain “OG Kush” to distinguish it as the original phenotype.
OG Kush Strain Info
According to Matt Berger and Josh D, “OG” stands for “Original.” However, some believe it might stand for “Ocean Grown” or “Original Gangster.”
Many growers think that OG Kush is a cross between Chemdawg and Hindu Kush, which explains why it is so good. Others suggest that it could be a cross of Lemon Thai and Pakistani Kush, which would account for its citrusy flavor and Kush-like structure.
OG Kush and its many phenotypes have won numerous awards over the years. The strain was even featured in “Weed Wars” on The Discovery Channel in 2011. There are very few cannabis strains that have earned the widespread acclaim that OG Kush has.
Since its inception, many OG Kush phenotypes have become popular. SFV OG, Ghost OG, Skywalker OG, and many others have reached celebrity status among cannabis growers and users. The wide variety of Kush phenotypes illustrates how magical this strain truly is.

Growing the OG Kush Strain
While OG Kush is a easy variety to grow, it is not recommended for new growers. It can be a challenge to keep this strain under control, so it is best suited for those who have some experience growing cannabis.
When growing OG Kush, it’s important to note that this strain requires attention and care. It needs lots of space for its large fan leaves, so growers should keep it in an open space. Maintaining proper humidity levels is essential, as this variety tends to be susceptible to powdery mildew infections. However, the solid yields of premium buds make this strain well worth the extra effort.
The flowering time for the OG Kush strain is between eight and ten weeks, so growers won’t have to wait long to grow this classic cultivar. When grown outdoors, OG Kush can be harvested around the beginning of October.
