This euphoric soon turns into a sedating that may ease muscle tension and promote a good night’s sleep. Due to its purported analgesic, the Purple Punch weed strain is well-liked among users.

Purple Punch Origin

Purple Punch’s tale begins with a timeless strain known as Granddaddy Purple, or GDP. During the early 2000s, Ken Estes, a celebrated activist and cannabis breeder, set out to create a cultivar that would offer from insomnia and pain. He had grown fond of a variety known as Purple Urkle but found that it lacked in yield. To improve its yield, Ken crossed his cut of Purple Urkle with a popular cash-cropping variety called Big Bud. He named the hybrid “Granddaddy Purple” to highlight the striking violet shades of the leaves and flowers.

When Ken released his Granddaddy Purple strain in 2003, it quickly grew in popularity among growers and users. Since its release, this strain has won several awards and earned a reputation as being one of the most powerful, aromatic, and high-yielding purple strains available.

Nearly a decade after the release of Granddaddy Purple, a group of Hawaiian breeders known as Supernova Gardens discovered a unique male phenotype of the strain. They used this plant to pollinate their cut of the classic Larry OG. Supernova dubbed this cross “Purple Punch,” perhaps to underscore its striking purple flowers, fruity flavor, and powerful.

Supernova gave a clone of Purple Punch to a grower known as Budologist and, soon, several growers had gotten their hands on a cut. Purple Punch quickly rose to celebrity status, and many well-known dispensaries such as the Jungle Boys were offering the strain.

Today, Purple Punch is a staple among cannabis users, who adore its rich, fruity fragrance.

Lineage

Purple Punch is said to be a cross of Granddaddy Purple and the world-famous Larry OG. Some growers have suggested that Larry OG is an original cutting of OG Kush, yet it displays some differences from the original OG Kush. Chiefly, Larry OG typically produces a greater yield and more robust branches than other OG cuts. Given its stouter structure, some think that Larry OG could be an S1 or a cross of OG Kush and another strain.

According to Ken Estes, Granddaddy Purple is a cross of Purple Urkle and Big Bud. Purple Urkle’s ancestry is unclear, but many growers believe that it is a special phenotype of Mendocino Purps. Big Bud, Granddaddy Purple’s father, is said to be a polyhybrid of Afghani, Haze, and Northern Lights.
