Dawg Lemons Strain
Lemon Tree, the mother of Dawg Lemons, is an illustrious strain of mysterious origins. Some growers believe that this cultivar was bred by an unknown collective of growers in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California. The growers had been cultivating cannabis for more than two decades when they began working on a cross of Lemon Skunk and Sour Diesel. They named this hybrid “Lemon Tree,” possibly to highlight its citrusy fragrance and lemon-shaped flowers.
Lemon Tree quickly became known as a dependable cash crop and, in 2014, it took first place for Best Hybrid at the Seattle Cannabis Cup. The strain went on to win first place at the San Francisco High Times Cannabis Cup, also in the Best Hybrid category. Today, Lemon Tree is a favorite among Sativa fans and growers alike.
Lemon Tree Lineage
Lemon Tree is a hybrid of Lemon Skunk and Sour Diesel. Lemon Skunk is believed to be an old-school Skunk No. 1 phenotype that circulated in California. This cut was originally made popular by a grower known as Lemon Man and later was grown by well-known breeders such as DNA Genetics and Green House Seed Company. Lemon Skunk delivers the traditional fragrance and flavor of Skunk, with additional notes of sweet-and-sour citrus.
The pedigree of Sour Diesel is unknown. Many growers believe that this cultivar was developed in New York City during the 1990s by a grower nicknamed AJ. Given Sour Diesel’s Sativa-dominant qualities and gasoline-like scent, some growers believe this variety might be a hybrid of Chemdawg and Super Skunk.
Lemon Tree presents a balanced mixture of Indica and Sativa genes. This is evident in the strain’s sturdy, Indica-like branches that support its large, fluffy, Sativa-like buds. It is also apparent in this cultivar’s calming yet energizing effects.
Stardawg, the father of Dawg Lemons, was created by JJ NYC—a renowned cannabis breeder and founder of Top Dawg Seeds. JJ bred Stardawg intending to create a line of seeds that exemplified the traits of the classic Chemdawg variety.
To create Stardawg, JJ selected an Afghan No. 1 male and used it to pollinate the clone-only cut of Chem D. Next, he backcrossed this hybrid with the Chem D two times, stabilizing its traits. Finally, he backcrossed this Chem-Afghan with Chem D for two generations, stabilizing the Chem traits. Finally, he used a phenotype of the backcrossed Chem D strain, Tres Dawg, to pollinate Chem 4 cut. JJ named this strain “Stardawg,” perhaps to emphasize its large trichomes that glitter like stars.
JJ NYC states that Stardawg is a hybrid of Chem 4 and Tres Dawg. Tres Dawg, the father of Stardawg, is a backcross of Chem D using an Afghan No. 1 from Sensi Seeds. Both Chem 4 and Chem D are descendants of Chemdawg—a legendary strain of unknown ancestry. Given its sharp, skunky scent, some growers have suggested that Chemdawg could be the offspring of Skunk No. 1. Others have proposed that it might be a hybrid of Pakistani Kush and Lemon Thai.

Dawg Lemons Structure
Lemon Tree is medium to tall in height, with robust branches and large fan leaves that have narrow, Sativa-like leaflets. This strain forms big, fluffy, bright-green buds that are liberally sprinkled with trichomes. Some growers state that the buds resemble lemons in their shape and size. When properly trained, Lemon Tree can form numerous branches that grow to produce enormous colas.
Stardawg is of medium height, with thick stalks and compact internodal spacing. This variety produces giant colas that comprise hefty, lime-green buds with auburn hairs and emerald-green sugar leaves. Some less-common Stardawg phenotypes may display shades of violet when cultivated in cold climates.
Dawg Lemons is medium to tall in height, with strong branches and moderate internodal spacing. This strain forms huge colas with clusters of bright, fluffy, and frosty buds. Lemon Tree-dominant phenotypes may be somewhat taller and have thinner leaflets than Stardawg-dominant plants.
Growing Dawg Lemons
Dawg Lemons is a hardy and vigorous strain that is suitable for beginner and experienced growers alike. This strain is pest- and disease-resistant and can thrive in a variety of climates. Given its fluffy bud structure, this strain is less susceptible to botrytis than most hybrid varieties.
Some Lemon Tree-dominant plants may stretch in height substantially during the early flowering stage. To control the upward growth, growers can employ high- and low-stress training methods such as topping and fimming. These techniques will help to minimize the stretch and maximize the yield of Dawg Lemons.
Pest & Disease Control
Although Dawg Lemon is highly pest- and disease-resistant, growers should always follow integrated pest management (IPM) principles. Growers can prevent most common issues by providing the plants with plenty of lighting and airflow, keeping temperature and humidity levels in check, pruning excess fan leaves, avoiding overwatering the plants, and regularly cleaning the grow room. These practices will help Dawg Lemons plants to reach their full potential.
