Rum Runner Strain
Triangle Kush, the mother of Rum Runner, is one of the most storied cannabis cuts on earth. This phenotype is said to have been named after three cities in Florida that are famous for their cannabis production—Miami, Jacksonville, and Tampa.
Triangle Kush’s story began with Origins_tk, or OTK, a young cannabis aficionado who lived in South Florida. During the 1980s, OTK developed an interest in surfing, and soon, he started associating with fellow surfers who also were passionate about cannabis. In 1990, one of OTK’s surfer friends introduced him to a grower in Central Florida known as the Governor. This grower appreciated OTK’s love of cannabis and asked the young surfer to work for him at his grow operation. OTK enthusiastically agreed and moved to Central Florida to work for the Governor.
The Governor’s operation was remarkably elaborate for the time, but he cultivated only a few varieties of cannabis. OTK wanted to expand their offerings, so he traveled to Amsterdam to seek out new strains. OTK purchased more than $10,000 worth of seeds from The Seed Bank of Holland and brought them back to the Governor.
While test-growing the new seeds, OTK came across some exceptional Hindu Kush phenotypes. He brought these plants to the main grow room and put them next to the Governor’s cherished cultivar, known as Emerald Triangle.
A few months later, OTK was harvesting the plants when he noticed that one Hindu Kush female had turned hermaphroditic and had pollinated the Governor’s Emerald Triangle plants.
Within the batch of seeded flowers, OTK’s friends discovered Triangle Kush— one of the most celebrated strains in the world.
Triangle Kush Lineage
Triangle Kush, the mother of Rum Runner, is believed to be a cross of Emerald Triangle and Hindu Kush. Emerald Triangle was a renowned cultivar that was distributed throughout Florida during the 1990s; however, little is known about the origin and pedigree of this strain.
Hindu Kush is a pure-Indica landrace strain that originated in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Nevil Schoenmakers brought this cultivar to Amsterdam and inbred it for several generations, optimizing it for indoor cultivation.
Purple Punch is a widely popular cultivar, treasured for its luscious, fruity fragrance and extraordinary resin production. Purple Punch was initially developed during the early 2010s by a group of Hawaiian growers known as Supernova Gardens. The growers discovered a robust Granddaddy Purple male and used it to pollinate the clone-only cut of Larry OG Kush. This hybrid was named “Purple Punch,” emphasizing its vibrant coloration and potent effects. Today, Purple Punch is in high demand among growers and smokers, who enjoy this strain’s sugary scent and calming effects.
Purple Punch Lineage
Purple Punch, the other parent of Rum Runner, is a hybrid of Larry OG and Granddaddy Purple. Some suggest that Larry OG is a clone of the classic OG Kush; however, this cut is more robust than other OG cuts and offers a more substantial yield. In light of these differences, many believe that Larry OG might be a hybrid or S1 of OG Kush.
Granddaddy Purple, the father of Purple Punch, is an Indica-dominant cross of Purple Urkle and Big Bud. Some growers have suggested that Purple Urkle is descendent of Mendocino Purps. Big Bud, in turn, is thought to be a crossbreed of Afghani, Haze, and Northern Lights.

Greenpoint Seeds created Rum Runner by using Supernova Gardens’ clone-only cut of Purple Punch to pollinate the authentic Triangle Kush. Rum Runner provides an assortment of phenotypes that display the unique qualities of both Triangle Kush and Purple Punch. This strain offers a dash of color and fruity flavor to the classic Triangle Kush.
Rum Runner Aroma
Triangle Kush is esteemed for its rich, earthy fragrance. This variety features the characteristic perfume of OG Kush—pine, soil, petrol, and citrus—with additional herbal undertones. In the jar, Triangle Kush smells of tangy citrus, with earthy and floral hints. When broken apart, the buds release sharp notes of fuel and pine.
Purple Punch, the other parent of Rum Runner, is famous for its superbly sweet and fruity bouquet. This cultivar emits unmistakable notes of berry and grape soda. Some users also notice subtle hints of vanilla and herbs when breaking apart the sticky buds.
Rum Runner brings together the rich aromas of both of its parents. This strain smells of grape and berry, mixed with hints of damp soil, gasoline, and lemon. Its sweet and earthy bouquet will keep users coming back for more.
Run Runner Flavor
Rum Runner combines the earthy, savory flavor of Triangle Kush with the sweet, fruity taste of Purple Punch, creating a complex blend of flavors that are sure to please. This variety tastes of grape candy and berries, with undertones of soil, citrus, and fuel. Some Triangle Kush-dominant phenotypes may taste earthier, and Purple Punch-dominant plants may be fruitier.
Rum Runner Effects
Cannabis users cherish the potent, narcotic stone of Triangle Kush. This mostly-Indica strain delivers a profoundly soothing and blissful effect that may help to reduce pain and uplift the mood. Triangle Kush offers a calming, body-numbing stone that may cause users to drift off into a deep sleep. With more than 20 percent THC, Triangle Kush is an exceptionally potent strain.

Rum Runner Structure
Triangle Kush is medium to tall in height, with thin, elongated branches that have substantial internodal spacing. This cultivar forms compact, rock-hard buds that are caked in resin. The dark-green buds are bejeweled with amber pistils and an abundance of trichomes. When cultivated in cold climates, the leaves of Triangle Kush may reveal hues of red and violet.
Purple Punch is of medium height, with stout branches and broad fan leaves. This strain yields colossal colas that are frosty and colorful. The buds are moderately dense and feature lavender-colored sugar leaves and vibrant orange pistils. When exposed to chilly temperatures, Purple Punch’s leaves and buds typically display deep shades of purple.
Rum Runner is of medium height, with thick stems and extensive lateral branching. This variety produces medium- to large-size colas with an excellent calyx-to-leaf ratio. The forest-green buds often display tinges of purple when exposed to cool temperatures.
Growing Rum Runner
Triangle Kush is a fairly simple strain to grow but can be somewhat tricky for inexperienced growers. High- or low-stress training methods and proper nutrition are essential to achieve a decent yield. Triangle Kush is a hardy strain that can endure most environmental stressors. This variety can be grown indoors or outdoors; however, it prospers in a warm and dry environment, with abundant lighting and a consistent pH.
In contrast, Purple Punch is very easy to grow and is resistant to most pests and diseases. This cultivar stays compact during the flowering period and requires little training to deliver a generous yield.
Rum Runner is much easier to cultivate than Triangle Kush and is suitable for growers of all skill levels. This strain is adaptable and can thrive in a variety of environments. When provided with a mild climate, proper nutrition, and plenty of lighting, this strain can complete the flowering period in just nine weeks; however, some Triangle Kush-dominant phenotypes may take up to ten weeks to fully ripen.
Pest & Disease Control
Rum Runner is resistant to most pests; however, some phenotypes may be vulnerable to caterpillar infestations. Growers can avoid infestations by utilizing barrier fabrics and predatory insects. Foliar sprays may also be used during the vegetative growth period but should not be applied to the plants during the flowering cycle.
Triangle Kush tends to require an extra supply of calcium and magnesium. Some Kush-dominant phenotypes of Rum Runner also may need to be provided with additional calcium and magnesium. Growers can prevent deficiencies by feeding the plants with a liquid cal-mag supplement or enriching the soil with dry amendments such as crushed oyster shells, gypsum, and langbeinite.
