Purple Scout Strain
Girl Scout Cookies
Few cannabis strains have received the widespread acclaim that Girl Scout Cookies has. This legendary cultivar has become a staple among growers, breeders, and users around the world.
The story of Girl Scout Cookies began in the early 2010s in the Bay Area of California. A rapper known as Berner, and his friend Jigga, set out to breed their own cannabis strain. They had acquired a cutting of Florida OG, as well as a hybrid of Durban Poison and a mysterious variety known as “F1.” In a garage in the Sunset District of San Francisco, Berner and Jigga reversed the Florida OG and used it to pollinate this enigmatic Durban-F1 hybrid. From that batch of seeds, Berner and Jigga discovered what would become one of the most popular strains of all time—Girl Scout Cookies.
Girl Scout Cookies’ rapid rise to fame is no surprise. Its extreme resin production, stunning purple hues, and unique flavor made Girl Scout Cookies stand out from OG Kush, Chemdawg, and other popular strains. Soon, growers across the country were vying to get their hands on a cut of Girl Scout Cookies.
Due to the astonishing success of the strain, Berner and Jigga decided to found the Cookies Family—a collective of renowned breeders including PieGuy, Seed Junky Genetics, and several others. Today, the Cookies Family is one of the most respected breeding collectives in the cannabis industry. Berner and his crew have used their prized Girl Scout Cookies cut and its offspring to produce a plethora of award-winning strains such as Sunset Sherbet, Gelato #33, and Biscotti.
Girl Scout Cookies Lineage
Although Girl Scout Cookies is a well-known strain, its ancestry is unclear. According to the Cookies Family, Girl Scout Cookies is a polyhybrid of Durban Poison, Florida OG, and an unknown variety dubbed “F1.” Durban Poison is a landrace Sativa that originated in South Africa before being brought to Europe and the United States by Ed Rosenthal in the 1970s.
The ancestry of Florida OG also is a mystery. Many believe it to be the original phenotype of OG Kush that was brought from Florida to Silverlake, California by Matt “Bubba” Berger in the 1990s.
Purple Punch
Purple Punch has reached celebrity status in recent years due to its powerful effects, fruity flavor, and outstanding bag appeal. Growers appreciate its fast flowering time, large yield, and hardy growth. Medical and recreational users can’t get enough of its sweet, fruity flavor and potent effects.
Purple Punch was developed in Hawaii during the early 2010s by a group of growers known as Supernova Gardens. To create the strain, the growers selected a Granddaddy Purple stud and used it to pollinate their cut of Larry OG. They named the resulting hybrid Purple Punch in light of its violet color and hard-hitting stone. Today, Purple Punch is a favorite among many growers and users around the world.
Purple Punch Lineage
Purple Punch is a hybrid of two powerful Indica-dominant strains—Larry OG and Granddaddy Purple. Larry OG is a phenotype of OG Kush that tends to produce more robust branches and a larger yield than other OG cuts. Due to its larger stature, many growers believe Larry OG might be a hybrid of OG Kush and another strain, or possibly an S1 of OG Kush. This cut was reportedly popularized in the early 2000s by a group of bikers in Orange County, California.
Granddaddy Purple, the father of Purple Punch, is a cross of Purple Urkle and Big Bud. Many believe Purple Urkle to be a select phenotype Mendocino Purps. Big Bud is a high-yielding polyhybrid of Afghani, Haze, and Northern Lights.

One of Girl Scout Cookies’ most cherished qualities is its unique aroma. True to its name, this cultivar emits a pleasant scent of cookie dough, with hints of cherry, lemon, and mint. The sweet-and-spicy smell is truly one of a kind, and has become a favorite among many users.
Purple Punch, in turn, exudes a luscious fragrance that is sweet and fruity. This variety fills the room with notes of grape candy and berry soda. When grinding up the flowers, hints of vanilla and spices are released.
Purple Scout mixes the sweet-and-spicy bouquet of Girl Scout Cookies with the fruity fragrance of Purple Punch, create a terpene-rich cultivar that is highly aromatic. This variety smells distinctly of cookie dough, grape, and berry candy, with hints of vanilla and mint. Some Cookies-dominant phenotypes may smell more of cookie dough and mint, and some Purple Punch-Dominant phenotypes may be fruitier.
Purple Scout Flavor
Purple Scout blends the rich, doughy flavor of Girl Scout Cookies with the saccharine-sweet taste of Purple Punch. This dessert-themed strain coats the mouth with notes of grape candy, blueberry, cherry, and cookie dough, with hints of menthol and spices. Some plants may taste more of cookie dough, and others may taste more of grape and berry. Most plants will offer a blend of these rich flavors.
Purple Scout Effects
Due to its pedigree of potent Sativa and Indica strains, Girl Scout Cookies delivers a strong but balanced high that stimulates the mind and soothes the body. Users report that the high begins with a thought-provoking cerebral surge that elevates the mood and inspires creativity. This euphoric cerebral high is followed by a body-melting stone that may ease pain and tension. Given its profoundly relaxing stone, Girl Scout Cookies is best suited to afternoon or nighttime use.
Purple Punch also delivers a balanced high that is calming and soothing. Users report that Purple Punch may relieve pain and general discomfort, and improve the mood. Purple Punch’s potent effects are best enjoyed during the evening or at nighttime.

When consumed in excess, this variety may cause users to slip into a deep sleep. Smoking a joint of Purple Scout is the perfect way to unwind after a long day.
Purple Scout Structure
Girl Scout Cookies is tall in height, with thin, spindly branches that have substantial internodal spacing. This variety sports small, dark-green leaves that have long, red petioles. Girl Scout Cookies forms small colas with tightly packed clusters of incredibly frosty buds. The flowers are adorned with bright-orange pistils, dark-purple sugar leaves, and an unusually thick blanket of trichomes. When exposed to cold temperatures, Girl Scout Cookies often displays shades of purple and black in its leaves and flowers.
In contrast, Purple Punch is short to medium in height, with extensive lateral branching and strong, thick stems. This variety forms large colas that are liberally dusted with trichomes. Purple Punch produces moderately dense buds that are festooned with vibrant pistils, violet sugar leaves, and a sparkling sheen of resin.
Purple Scout is of medium height, with moderate internodal spacing; however, some Cookies-dominant phenotypes may be taller and lankier. Purple Scout forms medium-size colas and dark-green leaves that often fade to purple, red, and black. This cultivar produces dense, frosty buds that are remarkably colorful.
Growing Purple Scout
For novice growers, Girl Scout Cookies is a fairly challenging strain to cultivate. In order to reach its full potential, this variety requires proper nutrition, a stable pH, ample lighting, and a temperate climate with low humidity. Girl Scout Cookies can be grown indoors and outdoors, but flourishes in a highly controlled environment.
In contrast, Purple Punch is a hardy and resilient strain that is very beginner-friendly. This variety is highly pest- and disease-resistant and can withstand most environmental stressors. Purple Punch can thrive indoors and outdoors, using a variety of growing media. When grown outdoors, Purple Punch performs best in a warm, dry climate.
Purple Scout is easier to grow than Girl Scout Cookies, and is resistant to most pests and diseases; however, some Cookies-dominant phenotypes may be more sensitive to unfavorable growing conditions. This variety can be grown indoors and outdoors, and tends to prefer a warm and dry climate.
Some Cookies-dominant phenotypes of Purple Scout may stretch considerably during the early flowering stage. To limit the vertical stretch, growers typically use high-stress and low-stress training methods, such as super cropping, topping, or fimming. By training the plants, growers can boost the yield of Purple Scout by encouraging more lateral branching.
Pest & Disease Control
Although Purple Scout is resistant to most pests, growers should always be vigilant. By keeping the garden clean, providing ample ventilation, and avoiding overwatering the plants, growers can prevent infestations of fungus gnats, spider mites, and other pests. During the vegetative growth period, they can also use foliar sprays such as insecticidal soap or neem oil to prevent pests from invading the garden; however, these sprays should not be applied to the plants once they begin to bud.
Due to the density of the flowers, some Purple Scout phenotypes may be susceptible to bud rot. To prevent bud rot, growers prune the plants, provide them with ample airflow and lighting, and keep the humidity level below 50 percent during the flowering stage.
Girl Scout Cookies tends to require more calcium and magnesium than most strains. Some Cookies-dominant phenotypes of Purple Scout also may need additional calcium and magnesium. To prevent deficiencies, growers can use a cal-mag supplement or dry amendments such as oyster shells, dolomite lime, and Epsom salt.
Harvesting & Curing Purple Scout
Purple Scout is a fast-flowering strain and typically reaches maturity within nine to ten weeks. Harvesting at peak ripeness is critical, as the yield and potency may increase significantly during the final days of flowering. The most effective way to determine if the plants are ready for harvest is to use a magnifying glass to observe the trichomes. If they are still transparent, the plants are not ripe. When the trichomes have turned white, with some beginning to turn amber, the plants are at peak ripeness.
One to two weeks before harvesting the plants, most growers stop using fertilizers and flush the growing medium with distilled water. This practice may help to improve the flavor of the buds by flushing out excess fertilizers. Purple Scout’s leaves may fade from dark green to yellow, purple, and black during the flushing phase.
When the plants are ripe and ready to be harvested, growers cut down the branches and remove the large fan leaves. Next, they use trimming shears to remove the small leaves on the flowers. These leaves can be used to make hash, tinctures, edibles, and other products that are rich in THC.
After manicuring the buds, growers hang up the branches to dry for three to six days. Once the stems snap rather than bend, growers know that the buds have been thoroughly dried.
The final step is to cure the flowers. Growers remove the buds from the branches and place them in sealable jars. They store the jars in a cool, dark place and open them a couple of times a day to remove excess moisture. After approximately two weeks, the buds can be smoked; however, a proper cure may take many weeks.
