Chem 4 x Animal Cookies
Cookiedawg is a feminized hybrid of two of the most potent cannabis strains in existence—Chem 4 and Animal Cookies. Cookiedawg combines the best qualities of Chem and Cookies to create a boutique-quality cultivar that is frosty, flavorful, and highly aromatic.
Chem 4 is one of the most celebrated phenotypes of Chemdawg. This elite, clone-only variety delivers an enormous yield of top-shelf buds that reek of skunk and citrus. Animal Cookies, in turn, is known for its potent effects, exotic flavor, and outstanding bag appeal. By combining Chem 4 with Animal Cookies, Greenpoint Seeds has developed a strain—Cookiedawg—that offers the pungent aroma and bountiful yield of Chem and the extraordinary resin production and bag appeal of Cookies.
Chem 4, the mother of Cookiedawg, is a descendent of the legendary Chemdawg strain, which has produced an array of elite phenotypes, including Chem ’91, Chem D, and Chem Sis.
The Chemdawg story began in the late 1980s, when a group of friends from Crested Butte, Colorado, discovered a strain called Dog Bud. The name is said to have come from the cultivar’s potency, which caused users to “roll over like a dog.” The friends realized that the Dog Bud was exceptional and, in the summer of 1991, they brought a pound of it to a Grateful Dead concert in Indiana.
During the concert, a young grower known as Chemdog bought some of the Dog Bud and instantly fell in love with it. He exchanged phone numbers with the Colorado growers and, after returning to his home in Massachusetts, asked them to send him more of the Dog Bud.
When Chemdog received the package, he was delighted to find 13 seeds in the Dog Bud. That same year, he germinated a few of the seeds and discovered two of the finest phenotypes in cannabis history: Chem ’91 and Chem Sis. These plants offered powerful highs, generous yields, and unparalleled bag appeal.
In 2006, Chemdog reunited with one of the growers from Crested Butte, known as Joe Brand. Chemdog gave Joe four of the six remaining seeds he had found in the Dog Bud, and Joe germinated them. Of those plants, the one labeled “Chem 4” was Joe’s favorite. This phenotype offered a large yield of resin-covered buds that reeked of citrus, skunk, and kerosene. Joe nicknamed this plant the “Reunion Pheno” to commemorate his rendezvous with Chemdog.
Chem 4 since has received worldwide acclaim, and many breeders have used this elite, clone-only variety to create potent and pungent hybrids.
Chem 4 Lineage
Chem 4, the mother of Cookiedawg, is a descendent of Dog Bud—a mysterious strain that made its debut in Crested Butte, Colorado, during the late 1980s. The pedigree of Dog Bud is unknown. Due to its skunky and earthy aroma, some growers believe that Dog Bud may be a hybrid of Skunk No. 1. Others have suggested that it may be a cross of Pakistani Kush and Lemon Thai.
Animal Cookies, also known as Animal Crackers, is the other parent of Cookiedawg. Animal Cookies is a rare, clone-only cultivar that was created by the Cookies Family of San Francisco. The Cookies Family, one of the most esteemed groups of breeders in the cannabis industry, has created many well-known cultivars such as Gelato 33 and Girl Scout Cookies.
Animal Cookies is a potent hybrid of Girl Scout Cookies and Fire OG, producing a larger yield and stronger branches than are typical of most Cookies varieties. Users report that Animal Cookies delivers a powerfully narcotic stone that may numb the body and boost the mood. Its potent effects and exotic flavor have made Animal Cookies a favorite among growers, breeders, and users.
Animal Cookies Lineage
Animal Cookies, the other parent of Cookiedawg, is a hybrid of Girl Scout Cookies and Fire OG. The lineage of Girl Scout Cookies is unclear, but the Cookies Family has stated that it is a three-way cross of Durban Poison, Florida OG, and an unknown strain referred to as “F1.”
The pedigree of Fire OG also is unclear. Some growers suggest that Fire OG is an original phenotype of OG Kush, while others maintain that it is an S1 or hybrid of OG. Animal Cookies offers the unique color and flavor of Girl Scout Cookies and the potency and yield of Fire OG.
Cookiedawg Feminized Cannabis Seeds
Greenpoint Seeds used the elite, clone-only cut of Animal Cookies to pollinate the classic Chem 4 cut. The resulting hybrid—Cookiedawg—produces a range of top-tier phenotypes that share the award-winning qualities of Chem and Cookies. Some plants may offer the large yield and funky flavor of Chem 4, and others may provide the narcotic stone and exceptional bag appeal of Animal Cookies. Most plants will present a combination of these qualities.
Chem 4, the mother of Cookiedawg, is a terpene-rich variety that offers a pungent and funky aroma. This cultivar fills the room with the scents of lemon, skunk, petrol, soil, and industrial cleaning products. Chem 4 smells more citrusy than other Chemdawg phenotypes do, but it retains the skunk funk, as well.
Animal Cookies radiates a sweet-and-sour scent that is complex and powerful. This variety offers a bouquet of sweet cookie dough, petrol, skunk, and menthol, with hints of soil and mixed nuts. When the buds are broken apart, hints of cherry, pine, and pepper become apparent.
Cookiedawg combines the funky, citrusy aroma of Chem 4 with the sweet-and-sour scent of Animal Cookies. Some phenotypes may offer the funky lemon aroma of Chem 4, and others may share the sweet-and-sour scent of Animal Cookies. Most plants will offer a mixture of these aromas.
Cookiedawg offers a robust and complex flavor that is sweet and funky. This variety coats the mouth with notes of lemon, cherries, and cookie dough, mixed with bitter flavors of skunk, pine, soil, and kerosene. Some plants may lean toward the lemon and pine flavor of Chem 4, and others may produce the sweet, funky flavor of Animal Cookies.
Like most Chemdawg phenotypes, Chem 4 offers a well-balanced effect that is both relaxing and uplifting. This potent variety is capable of producing buds that contain as much as 27 percent THC. The high starts with a mood-boosting rush of euphoria and creativity. Soon, this transforms into a calming and body-numbing stone that may relieve pain and ease tension. When consumed in moderation, Chem 4 makes for an excellent all-day smoke.
Animal Cookies provides a powerfully narcotic stone. Users report that this strain may relieve pain and stress, and ease muscle tension. When consumed in excess, Animal Cookies may send users into a deep sleep. This cultivar is perfect for a relaxing evening smoke or nightcap.
Cookiedawg melds the powerful effects of Chem 4 and Animal Cookies, offering a well-balanced high that can be felt strongly in both the body and mind. Soon after smoking Cookiedawg, many users report that a wave of ecstasy and inspiration floods the mind. This uplifting cerebral effect slowly descends into a calming stone that may ease muscle tension and relieve pain. Some Chem 4-dominant phenotypes may be more uplifting and cerebral, and some Animal Cookies-dominant phenotypes may be more narcotic and pain-relieving. Cookiedawg is an excellent choice for an afternoon or nighttime smoke.
Chem 4 is of medium height, with strong branches, tight internodal spacing, and sharply serrated leaves. Chem 4 offers a larger yield than most Chemdawg phenotypes, and produces massive colas that are heavily coated in resin. This cultivar forms dense, lime-green buds with swollen calyxes and dark-red pistils.
Animal Cookies is medium to tall in height, with long, stretchy branches and small, frosty buds; however, this cultivar is somewhat more robust than most Cookies varieties. Animal Cookies forms thick, dark-green leaves that often turn purple when exposed to cold temperatures. This cultivar produces small, bright-green buds that are ornamented with red pistils and hints of purple in the sugar leaves. The flowers are dense and heavily coated in trichomes.
Cookiedawg is medium to tall in height, with long branches and thick, emerald-green leaves. As harvest time approaches, the leaves of some phenotypes may display hues of purple and yellow. This variety forms medium-size colas and dense flowers that are glazed in a thick layer of trichomes. Some Chem 4-dominant phenotypes may be somewhat shorter, with tighter internodal spacing and larger colas. Some Cookies-dominant phenotypes may be frostier and more colorful.
Chem 4 is a hardy strain that is resilient to most pests, diseases, and environmental stressors. This cultivar is highly adaptable and can flourish in both indoor and outdoor environments. When grown outdoors, Chem 4 prefers a warm climate, with moderate humidity. Some growers claim that Chem 4 and other Chemdawg phenotypes are more flavorful when grown with synthetic fertilizers, but other growers prefer to use organic soil. This strain is amenable to a variety of cultivation techniques.
In contrast, Animal Cookies is notoriously challenging to grow and is sensitive to many environmental stressors. To produce a modest yield, this variety requires adequate nutrition, ample lighting, a stable pH, and a moderate climate.
Cookiedawg is a moderately easy strain to cultivate, and is resistant to most pests, diseases, and environmental stressors; however, some Animal Cookies-dominant phenotypes may be more sensitive to fluctuations in pH, temperature, humidity, and other conditions. Cookiedawg can be grown both indoors and outdoors if given a warm and dry climate.
Pest & Disease Control
Both Chem 4 and Animal Cookies are susceptible to powdery mildew. Like its parents, Cookiedawg may be prone to powdery-mildew infections. Growers can prevent powdery-mildew infections by gently pruning the plants, using fans to provide ample air circulation, and lowering the humidity in the grow room. Foliar sprays such as water and sodium bicarbonate solutions will help stop the spread of powdery mildew.
Some phenotypes of Cookiedawg may be susceptible to bud rot. Growers can prevent bud rot by pruning the plants, providing ventilation, and keeping the humidity level low during the flowering period (below 50 percent).
Both Chem 4 and Animal Cookies require an ample supply of calcium and magnesium. Cookiedawg also thrives on a diet rich in calcium and magnesium. Growers can prevent calcium and magnesium deficiencies by including a cal-mag supplement in the nutrient schedule or amending the growing medium with dolomite lime and Epsom salt. Experienced growers normally use a pH meter when mixing nutrient solutions. This helps ensure that the plants receive a consistent pH and can absorb the optimum amount of nutrients.
Harvesting & Curing Cookiedawg
Most phenotypes of Cookiedawg reach maturity in nine weeks; however, some plants may take up to ten weeks to fully ripen. Growers can determine if the plants are mature by using a microscope or jeweler’s loupe to observe the trichomes on the buds. When the trichomes turn milky white, with some starting to turn amber, the plants are fully mature and ready to be harvested.
If Cookiedawg is harvested when the trichomes are still transparent, it may produce a more uplifting and cerebral high. If it is harvested when the trichomes are mostly amber, the effects may be more narcotic and sedating. Harvesting the plants when they are fully mature will help ensure a generous yield of potent buds.
One to two weeks before harvest, growers typically stop feeding the plants with nutrient solutions, and flush them with plain, distilled water. This process may help to remove excess fertilizer from the flowers and enhance their flavor, aroma, and overall quality.
To harvest the plants, growers remove the ripest colas first. They remove the large fan leaves from the branches, and then manicure the buds by trimming away the small sugar leaves that surround the flowers. Manicuring the buds will improve their appearance and make them smoother and more flavorful when smoked.
After the flowers have been trimmed, the branches can be hung by a node or placed on a drying rack for three to six days. It may take longer to dry Cookiedawg buds, given their extreme frost and density. The buds are dry when the branches snap rather than bend.
Once the flowers have been dried, they are ready to be cured. Curing helps preserve the aroma, flavor, and potency of the flowers. To cure the buds, growers usually remove the flowers from the branches, store them in sealable glass jars, and keep them in a cool, dry, and dark place. They open, or “burp,” the jars twice a day for three days. This prevents excess moisture from accumulating in the flowers. After three days, growers burp the jars once a day for the next two weeks. The buds may be smoked after two weeks; however, it may take four to eight weeks to cure them properly.
