The story of Shoreline OG starts with a classic cannabis strain known as Texas Shoreline. This rare cultivar is believed to have descended from an old Sensi Skunk strain that was brought from Amsterdam to the United States in the early 1980s by a group of growers in Houston, Texas. The strain was dubbed “Shoreline” after it made an appearance at a Grateful Dead concert at California’s Shoreline Amphitheatre. Shoreline quickly earned a reputation for its eyewatering bouquet and powerful cerebral high.
Years later, a breeder referred to as Shoreline Genetics acquired a cutting of the rare, clone-only Texas Shoreline strain. He used three select Deadhead OG males from Cali Connection to pollinate the legendary Shoreline cut, naming the hybrid Shoreline OG. Shoreline OG Lineage
Shoreline OG is a cross of Texas Shoreline and Deadhead OG. Texas Shoreline is believed to be an old Skunk No. 1 phenotype from Sensi Seeds. Skunk No. 1 is believed to be a hybrid of Afghani, Mexican, Colombian, and Thai landrace strains.
Deadhead OG, the father of Shoreline OG, is a hybrid of Chem ’91 and San Fernando Valley OG IBL. Chem ’91, the mother of Deadhead OG, is a descendent of Dog Bud—a mysterious strain that made its debut in Crested Butte, Colorado, during the late 1980s. The pedigree of Dog Bud is unknown. Due to its skunky and earthy aroma, some growers believe that Dog Bud may be a hybrid of Skunk No. 1. Others have suggested that it might be a cross of Pakistani Kush and Lemon Thai.
Animal Cookies is a powerful clone-only variety that was originally developed by the Cookies Family of San Francisco. The Cookies Family is a collective of renowned breeders that have created many elite cultivars such as Gelato 41 and Girl Scout Cookies.
The Cookies Family crossed its own legendary phenotype of Girl Scout Cookies with Fire OG, and brought Animal Cookies roaring to life. Animal Cookies Lineage
Animal Cookies, the other parent of Texas Toasted, is said to be a cross of Girl Scout Cookies and Fire OG. Although the ancestry of Girl Scout Cookies is unclear, most growers suggest that Animal Cookies is a hybrid of Durban Poison, Florida OG, and an unidentified strain referred to as “F1.”
The ancestry of Fire OG also is somewhat murky. Some believe that Fire OG is an S1 of OG Kush, but others maintain that it is the original phenotype of OG Kush that surfaced in the 1990s.

Animal Cookies is medium to tall in height, with long, thin branches and dark-green leaves. The leaves often display shades of purple and red when exposed to cold temperatures. Animal Cookies forms bright-green, popcorn-size buds dappled with purple sugar leaves and orange pistils.
Like its parents, Texas Toasted is medium to tall in height, with long, lanky branches and large, emerald-green leaves. This variety produces medium-size colas that are heavily dusted with resin. The buds are dense and frosty, with a thick sheen of trichomes. Some Cookies-dominant phenotypes may display hues of purple and red when exposed to cold temperatures.
Growing Texas Toasted
Shoreline OG is a hardy strain that is resilient to most pests, diseases, and environmental stressors. This cultivar can flourish in both indoor and outdoor environments. When cultivated outdoors, Shoreline OG reached its full potential in a temperate climate, with moderate humidity. This strain is amenable to a variety of cultivation techniques.
In contrast, Animal Cookies is a difficult strain to grow and may be stunted when exposed to environmental stressors. To produce a satisfactory yield, growers must provide Animal Cookies with a moderate climate, adequate nutrition, ample lighting, and a consistent pH.
Texas Toasted is a moderately easy strain to cultivate, and is resistant to most pests, diseases, and environmental stressors; however, some Animal Cookies-dominant phenotypes may be more sensitive to fluctuations in pH, temperature, humidity, and other conditions. Texas Toasted can be grown both indoors and outdoors if given a warm and dry climate.
Both Shoreline OG and Animal Cookies stretch significantly during the early flowering period. Like its parents, Texas Toasted may stretch in height as it begins to flower. Growers can limit the vertical stretch and increase the yield of Texas Toasted by using high-stress or low-stress training methods. This strain tends to benefit from topping, fimming, super cropping, and other training techniques.
Pest & Disease Control
Shoreline OG-dominant phenotypes are resistant to mold and mildew, but some Animal Cookies-dominant plants may be susceptible to fungal diseases. Growers can avoid powdery-mildew infections by thinning the canopy, providing sufficient lighting and air circulation, and reducing the humidity level. They can also use various foliar sprays to thwart powdery mildew; however, these should be avoided during the flowering period.
When exposed to excess humidity, some Texas Toasted plants may be vulnerable to bud rot. To prevent bud rot, growers can lightly prune the plants, offer ample lighting and air circulation, and keep the humidity level low (below 50 percent) throughout the flowering stage.
Cookies and OG strains typically require more calcium and magnesium than the average variety. Texas Toasted also thrives when provided with extra calcium and magnesium. To avoid calcium and magnesium deficiencies, growers can use a cal-mag supplement or amend the soil with gypsum, Epsom salt, oyster shells, or other dry amendments. Because some Texas Toasted phenotypes may be sensitive to pH fluctuations, most growers use a pH meter to test their nutrient solutions before feeding the plants.
Harvesting & Curing Texas Toasted
Texas Toasted is a fast-flowering variety, and usually finishes flowering in nine weeks; however, some phenotypes may take up to ten weeks to mature. The best way to tell if the plants are ripe is to observe the trichomes with a magnifying glass. When the trichomes have become milky white, the plants are ready for harvest. If the plants are harvested when they are not fully ripe, Texas Toasted may deliver a more energizing effect. If the plants are harvested late, the effects are typically more sleep-inducing. Harvesting Texas Toasted at peak maturity will ensure maximum potency and yield.
Roughly one to two weeks before harvest, growers typically stop feeding the plants with fertilizers and start flushing them with water. Many growers believe that flushing removes fertilizers in the buds and makes them smoother and more flavorful. During this period, the leaves of the plants may fade from bright green to yellow, red, and purple.
After flushing the plants, growers harvest them by cutting down the branches. They remove the fan leaves and carefully manicure the flowers by trimming away the sugar leaves on the buds. These sugar leaves can be used to make tinctures, extracts, and other products that are high in THC.
After a careful manicure, the buds are ready to be dried. Growers hang the branches on a clothesline or place them on a drying rack for up to a week. This process may take longer for Texas Toasted, given the density of the buds. When the buds feel light and crispy, they are fully dried.
Once the plants have been dried, the last step is to cure them. A proper cure is essential, as it preserves the potency, flavor, and aroma of the flowers. To cure the buds, growers cut them from the branches and store them in sealable jars. They store the jars in a cool and dry area, and open them once or twice a day to prevent the buds from remaining moist. After two weeks, the buds can be smoked; however, it may take up to eight weeks to cure them fully.
