What Are Feminized Seeds?

Regular cannabis seeds produce approximately 50 percent male offspring and 50 percent female offspring. In contrast, feminized seeds are bred to produce all-female plants, with roughly 99.9 percent of feminized seeds yielding female plants.

What Are the Benefits of Feminized Seeds?

Only female cannabis plants can produce the buds that users consume. Male cannabis plants, on the other hand, form pollen sacs that contain very low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol (CBD). As a result, most growers prefer to cultivate female plants unless they intend to breed their own cannabis seeds using the pollen from male plants.

With regular seeds, growers never know how many female plants they will get until well into the growing cycle. They also must identify and remove the male plants from the garden before they pollinate the females. When female plants become pollinated, they produce less and form seeds that are not ideal for smoking.

When using feminized seeds, growers can rest assured that nearly every plant they grow will produce buds. Furthermore, growers can save time and effort by not having to keep a watchful eye on their plants and remove the males before they pollinate the females.

How Are Feminized Seeds Produced?

Feminized seeds are produced by using one female plant to pollinate another female. In the past, growers used females that were prone to hermaphroditism to produce pollen. This practice often yielded seeds that were sexually unstable. Today, most breeders use ethylene-blocking chemicals to force sexually stable female plants to form pollen sacs. This method tends to produce genetically stable female plants that are not prone to hermaphroditism.
