DJ Short spent the 1970s doing the unglamorous work that made everything after possible: growing out imported Highland Thai and Afghani material indoors, season after season, selecting for what nobody else was selecting for. Out of that came Blueberry, bred by the end of that decade, the oldest continuously held line in this catalog.

His son JD put it best: everything around then was spice or skunk, and DJ came along with things that were berry and purple, and it blew people’s minds. Nearly every blue-named plant in the world walks back to his work.
