How Does Cannabis Affect the Body?

There are more than 80 types of cannabinoids within cannabis plants, each with its own unique properties; however, the most common cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabinol (CBD). These two compounds produce most cannabis effects.

Cannabinoids

THC is the cannabinoid that is primarily responsible for cannabis’ psychoactive properties. This compound works by activating the CB1 cannabinoid receptors in the brain, delivering the “high” associated with marijuana usage. Most modern cannabis strains have been bred to produce high amounts of THC, making them capable of delivering potent and fast-acting effects.

CBD is the other prevalent cannabinoid found within cannabis plants. Unlike THC, CBD is nonintoxicating and does not produce the psychoactive high that THC does. Due to its many purported therapeutic properties, CBD is popular among medical cannabis users. This compound may provide relief from stress, pain, and inflammation, along with a host of other benefits.

Terpenes

Terpenes are another variety of compounds found within cannabis plants. These compounds are primarily responsible for providing the distinct aromas and flavors of cannabis. Cannabis plants can produce more than 100 types of terpenes, with each strain producing its own unique terpene profile. Although these compounds are not psychoactive, they do play a role in determining cannabis effects. For example, the terpene Linalool is known for its relaxing and calming properties. Limonene, another common terpene, may elevate the mood and ease stress. A strain’s unique combination of terpenes and cannabinoids determines its distinct aroma, flavor, and effects.

Indica Vs. Sativa

Indica and Sativa are the two most common subspecies of cannabis. These two subspecies tend to produce varying cannabis effects, although this is not always the case. Indica strains typically offer sedating and body-numbing properties that may cause users to fall asleep. In contrast, Sativa strains commonly deliver an uplifting and motivating high. Finally, hybrids of Sativas and Indicas often provide balanced effects that can be felt in both the body and mind.
