Purple Punch X Stardawg
Royal Chem combines the powerful qualities of parents Purple Punch and Stardawg—two cannabis strains known for their pungent aromas and powerful effects. Royal Chem is a potent cultivar in both flavor and cannabinoid content, combining the sweet flavors of sour grape and earthy diesel fuel. As such, this strain is ideal for both experienced recreational consumers and medical patients who require effective relief from a variety of conditions.
Royal Chem Strain
The story of Purple Punch, the mother of Royal Chem, begins with a timeless cannabis cultivar known as Granddaddy Purple. In the early 2000s, Ken Estes, a prominent cannabis breeder, made it his goal to create a strain that would offer relief from discomfort and insomnia. He was especially fond of a cultivar known as Purple Urkle but found it lacking in yield. To remedy this, Ken crossed Purple Urkle with a high-yielding variety known as Big Bud, naming the hybrid Granddaddy Purple in light of its stunning violet hues on the leaves and flowers.
Granddaddy Purple hit the market in 2003, and it quickly became a hit among growers, breeders, and users. This cultivar has since won numerous awards and has become known as one of the most potent, aromatic, and high-yielding purple strains available.
In the early 2010s, a collective of Hawaiian growers known as Supernova Gardens discovered an exemplary Granddaddy Purple male and used this plant to pollinate their cut of Larry OG Kush. Supernova dubbed this hybrid “Purple Punch,” perhaps due to its lavender coloration and hard-hitting effects.
Supernova gave a clone of Purple Punch to a grower known as Budologist and, soon, many growers were cultivating the strain. Within a few years, Purple Punch had become a highly sought-after strain, and many reputable dispensaries such as the Jungle Boys were carrying it. Today, Purple Punch is a staple among many medical and recreational users who can’t get enough of its sugary sweet flavor and soothing effects.
Purple Punch Lineage
Purple Punch is said to be a cross of Larry OG and Granddaddy Purple. Some believe that Larry OG, Purple Punch’s mother, is a cutting of the original OG Kush; however, it displays some variances from the original cut. Notably, Larry OG typically produces a more substantial yield and sturdier branches than most OG cuts. As a result, many growers suggest that Larry OG could be an S1 or a cross of OG Kush and another strain.
Granddaddy Purple, Purple Punch’s father, is a cross of Purple Urkle and Big Bud. Many have suggested that Purple Urkle is a descendant of Mendocino Purps. Big Bud, the other parent of Granddaddy Purple, is said to be a polyhybrid of Afghani, Haze, and Northern Lights.
Stardawg, the father of Royal Chem, was bred by JJ NYC of Top Dawg Seeds and released in 2011. JJ developed Stardawg with the goal of translating Chemdawg’s distinctive qualities into a line of seeds.
JJ bred Stardawg by using an Afghan No. 1 from Sensi Seeds to cross with Chem D. Next, he backcrossed this Chem-Afghan strain with Chem D two times. Finally, he pollinated the Chem 4 cut with the Chem D backcross, effectively improving its yield and hardiness. JJ named his creation “Stardawg,” likely to underscore its large resin glands that are as shiny as stars.
JJ NYC states that Stardawg is a hybrid of Chem 4 and Tres Dawg. Tres Dawg, the father of Stardawg, is a backcross of Chem D using an Afghan No. 1 male. Chem 4 and Chem D are progenies of Chemdawg—a famous cultivar with an undefined lineage. Due to its powerful, funky scent, some believe that Chem D might descend from Skunk No. 1. Others have claimed that it is a cross of Lemon Thai and Pakistani Kush.

The breeders at Greenpoint Seeds created Royal Chem by using their trusty Stardawg male to pollinate the clone-only cut of Purple Punch. This hybrid, known as Royal Chem, displays many of the superb qualities of both parental lines. Some plants may provide the sweet, fruity flavor and knockout high of Purple Punch, and others may offer the pungent, skunky aroma and invigorating effects of Stardawg. Most phenotypes will offer a blend of these traits.
Royal Chem Aroma
Purple Punch, the mother of Royal Chem, is loaded with terpenes, emitting a distinct fragrance that is sweet and fruity. The cultivar smells of grape soda and ripe blueberries. When the buds are broken apart, sweet herbal notes also become noticeable.
Stardawg offers an inimitable bouquet with pungent notes of skunk, diesel, rotting meat, and damp soil. Some users also report undertones of menthol and lemon when grinding up the dried flowers.

Royal Chem Effects
Purple Punch is a potent cultivar known to produce between 18 percent and 20 percent THC. This variety delivers powerful effects that soothe both the body and mind. The high starts with a euphoric sensation that may elevate the mood and ease stress. This calming cerebral high soon changes into a numbing stone that may reduce muscle tension and pain. Users report that Purple Punch leaves them feeling tranquil and carefree while remaining motivated and functional.
Stardawg, Royal Chem’s father, provides an incredibly uplifting high. This cultivar may amplify mental focus and leave users feeling cheerful and motivated. Many users report that this strain tends to provide relief from pain, exhaustion, and tension.

Royal Chem Structure
Purple Punch is of medium height, with thick stalks and broad, dark-green leaves. This strain forms big, thick colas that are encrusted in resin. The flowers are moderately dense, featuring violet sugar leaves, bright-orange pistils, and a thick sheen of trichomes. When exposed to cold temperatures, Purple Punch typically displays deep shades of purple in the leaves and buds.
Stardawg also is of medium height, with strong branches, compact internodal spacing, and forest-green fan leaves. This variety produces hefty, towering colas that are heavily dusted with shimmering trichomes. Stardawg forms sizeable, light-green flowers with rusty orange pistils and emerald-green sugar leaves. Some rare Stardawg phenotypes display hues of purple as harvest time nears.
Like its parents, Royal Chem is of medium height, with thick branches and tight internodal spacing. This strain forms fat, hulking colas that are profoundly dense and frosty. Purple Punch-dominant phenotypes may be more colorful, and Stardawg-leaning plants may be taller with thinner leaflets.
Growing Royal Chem
Royal Chem is an excellent strain for intermediate to experienced growers. Though this variety requires additional support and a comprehensive nutritional regimen, it will reward growers with an abundance of large colas and sticky, flavorful trichomes. Royal Chem grows well in many environments but tends to perform best indoors.
Pest & Disease Control
Although Royal Chem is resistant to most pests, it may be somewhat susceptible to caterpillars. Growers can avoid caterpillar infestations by using beneficial insects, barrier fabrics, and foliar sprays such as neem oil or pyrethrum. Additionally, growers should always keep the grow room clean, maintain ideal temperature and humidity levels, and provide plenty of lighting and airflow. These practices will help to prevent most pests and diseases from harming the plants.
