Stardawg – Chemdog 4 x Tres Dawg

Stardawg – A Union of Chemdog 4 and Tres Dawg

The Story Behind Stardawg’s Creation

Our tale unfurls in a Grateful Dead concert parking lot in Indiana where the legendary Dog Bud was sold to Chemdog by P-Bud, Joe Brand, and the Coloradans. This chance encounter was not the end but merely the genesis of a genetic revolution that sparked the birth of extraordinary new “Chem” phenotypes.

Chem’s Origins and Evolution

The genesis of Stardawg harkens back to the late 1980s, with a group of friends in Crested Butte, Colorado who stumbled upon a strain called Dog Bud. This strain, a product of mostly outdoor grows, was rumoured to originate from indoor grows along the California-Oregon border. Its sublime characteristics were unlike anything they’d encountered before.

The friends decided to carry a pound of Dog Bud to a Grateful Dead show in Deer Creek, Indiana. In the scorching summers of that time, cannabis was hard to come by. Possessing a pound of the exclusive Dog Bud, they quickly sold their entire stash. Although this decision to sell out-of-state displeased some Coloradans, it marked a pivotal moment in cannabis history. This encounter took place during the shows on the 6th and 7th of June, 1991.

One of the Deadheads named Greg “Chemdog” Krzanowski, who was just 17, purchased a few ounces of Dog Bud. This seemingly insignificant act led to the discovery of some of the world’s most influential phenotypes. After returning home to Massachusetts, Chemdog requested more Dog Bud from the Coloradans. They had always inspected their Dog Bud for seeds but never found one. Chemdog, however, unearthed a goldmine. Among the Dog Bud, he found 13 seeds. Germinating a few in 1991 led to the discovery of the Chem 91 and Chem Sis, thus heralding a new era of cannabis.

Without Chem 91, we wouldn’t have Sour Diesel or Stardawg. Chemdog decided to give a friend some of the remaining Dog Bud seeds. This friend found Chem 4, a significant phenotype. Then, Chemdog germinated a few more seeds from the original batch of 13, which led to the discovery of Chem D, often hailed as the favorite among the original Chem phenotypes.

Unfolding the Stardawg Saga

JJ-NYC from Top Dawg Seeds exchanged a cut of Sour Diesel for Chem 91 with Chemdog, leading to an intriguing journey in the early 2000s. He married Chem 91 to an Afghan #1 procured from Sensi Seeds and after two backcrosses, Tres Dawg emerged. This Chem and Afghan genetics proved to be a triumphant base for crafting remarkable crosses, including the creation of Stardawg through the union of original Chem 4 and Topdawg’s Tres Dawg male.

The first Stardawg release by Top Dawg Seeds was in 2011, with the Stardawg Guava strain stealing the spotlight for its delightful tropical flavor, generous yields. Within a year, it bagged 1st place for Best Sativa at the Denver Cannabis Cup. Also noteworthy from the first release were the Corey Haim and Illuminati cuts, known for their pungent sour nose and increased potency. The third release, the ‘purple release’, was famous for the Kate Upton phenotype discovered by Green Dot Labs in Boulder, Colorado, a variant that seed companies, including Greenpoint Seeds, have utilized for their male. This release was favored by breeders.
