The Sweets is more than eye candy. Fruity Pebbles OG has been a favorite among growers and users since its release in the early 2000s. Growers love its generous yield and hardy growth, and users can’t get enough of its sweet, tropical-fruit flavor and mood-elevating effects. By combining this renowned cultivar with the rare, clone-only cut of Animal Cookies, Greenpoint Seeds has created The Sweets, a potent, dessert-themed strain that produces an array of elite phenotypes.
The Sweets Strain
Fruity Pebbles OG
Fruity Pebbles OG, the mother of The Sweets, is one of the most flavorful and aromatic cannabis strains on the market. This variety produces large, resinous buds that fill the room with the scents of tropical fruits and sugary cereal.
The story of Fruity Pebbles OG started with Alien Technology, a rare strain coveted by growers and breeders alike. Some growers believe that this variety is a pure landrace Indica that was brought to the United States by a soldier returning from Afghanistan. The soldier gave some seeds of this strain to an Oregon-based breeder nicknamed Obsol33t.
Obsol33t cultivated the seeds and soon became captivated by the strain. The flowers were remarkably potent and emitted a pleasant aroma of vanilla and incense. Determined to preserve this rare strain, Obsol33t found a suitable male from the same batch of seeds and used it to pollinate his cut of Chem D. Next, he chose a male from this Chem/Alien Technology hybrid and pollinated his cut of Las Vegas Purple Kush, dubbing this strain Alien Kush. He then crossed a male Alien Kush with the renowned Tahoe OG, creating Tahoe Alien.
Sometime during the early 2000s, Alien Genetics—a well-known group of cannabis breeders in California—used Obsol33t’s Tahoe Alien to pollinate a cross of Green Ribbon and Granddaddy Purple. The resulting hybrid was named “Fruity Pebbles OG” in recognition of its sweet, fruity aroma and OG Kush-like appearance.
In 2006, Alien Genetics offered a limited release of Fruity Pebbles OG, and the seeds were auctioned at $1,500 for a pack of 10. Although this strain was available for only a brief time, it received widespread acclaim from growers and users. Since its release, Fruity Pebbles OG has won numerous awards and is now highly sought-after among growers and breeders.
Fruity Pebbles OG Lineage
Fruity Pebbles OG, the mother of The Sweets, is a three-way hybrid of Green Ribbon, Granddaddy Purple, and Tahoe Alien. Green Ribbon is believed to be a hybrid of Green Crack, Trainwreck, Afghanica, and White Rhino. Granddaddy Purple is a hybrid of Purple Urkle and Big Bud. Finally, Tahoe Alien is a cross of Tahoe OG and Alien Kush.
The Sweets’ other parent is Animal Cookies. This unique cultivar was bred by the Cookies Family—a famous group of cannabis breeders based in California. The Cookies Family has created some of the most coveted cultivars, including Biscotti, Gelato 41, and London Pound Cake. The Cookies Family created Animal Cookies by using the illustrious Fire OG to pollinate the original cut of Girl Scout Cookies. Animal Cookies’ is known to be one of the most potent and flavorful cuts of Cookies available.
Animal Cookies Lineage
Animal Cookies, the other parent of The Sweets, is a hybrid of Girl Scout Cookies and Fire OG—two of the most cherished strains among medical and recreational users. Girl Scout Cookies’ pedigree is unclear. The Cookies Family has indicated that the strain is a hybrid of Florida OG and an undisclosed strain called “F1 Durban.” This mysterious strain likely is a descendant of Durban Poison, a classic landrace Sativa.
Fire OG, Animal Cookies’ other parent, also has a hazy pedigree. This cut, initially popularized by a breeder known as OG Raskal, is believed to be a cutting of the original OG Kush, but some growers think that it might be a daughter of OG Kush.
The Sweets Lineage
Greenpoint Seeds created The Sweets by using the Cookies Family cut of Animal Cookies to pollinate the elusive Fruity Pebbles OG. The resulting strain—The Sweets—brings together the unique traits of both of its parents. Some phenotypes may share the tropical fruit aroma of Fruity Pebbles OG, and others may lean toward the sweet-and-sour aroma of Animal Cookies. Nearly every plant will offer exceptional aroma, flavor, and potency.
The Sweets Aroma
Fruity Pebbles OG’s most notable quality is its sweet, fruity aroma. As its name suggests, this variety smells strongly of sugary cereal. Fruity Pebbles OG fills the room with the scents of berry, cherry, guava, and pineapple. When the buds are broken apart, they release additional hints of orange and lemon.
Animal Cookies provides a sweet-and-sour aroma that is delectable yet pungent. The flowers emit an earthy and nutty smell, with undertones of cookie dough, fuel, menthol, and skunk. When the buds are ground up, Animal Cookies exudes subtle notes of cherry, black pepper, and pine.
The Sweets brings together the sweet, tropical bouquet of Fruity Pebbles OG and the cookie dough funk of Animal Cookies. Some plants may present the fruity aroma of Fruity Pebbles OG, and others may share the sweet-and-sour tang of Animal Cookies. Most plants will offer a blend of these aromas.
The Sweets Flavor
The Sweets is a flavorful strain that tastes of berry, cherry, cookie dough, and citrus, mixed with bitter notes of soil, pine, petrol, and skunk. The sweet-and-zesty flavor lingers on the palate for several minutes after smoking. Depending on the phenotype, The Sweets may be sweeter and fruitier or may taste more of cookie dough, soil, and skunk.
The Sweets Effects
Fruity Pebbles OG offers a well-balanced high that is remarkably potent. This variety is known to produce more than 20 percent THC. Almost immediately after smoking Fruity Pebbles OG, users report experiencing a powerful cerebral effect that elevates the mood and relieves stress. Within minutes, this powerful head-high makes its way to the rest of the body, relaxing muscles and easing pain. Due to its uplifting and mood-boosting effects, this variety makes for an excellent all-day smoke, provided that it is consumed in moderation.
In contrast, Animal Cookies provides a relaxing, sedating effect that can be felt almost immediately. Some users report that the body-numbing stone eases pain and helps them drift off into a deep sleep. Animal Cookies makes for a delightful evening or weekend treat.
By combining these two powerful strains, The Sweets offers a potent but balanced high, which can stimulate the mind and soothe the body. The high begins with a rush of euphoria, and slowly evolves into a calming and soothing body stone. Fruity Pebbles-dominant phenotypes may be more uplifting, and Animal Cookies-dominant phenotypes may be more sedating.
The Sweets Structure
Fruity Pebbles OG is tall in height, with long branches that have substantial internodal spacing. This cultivar forms large, heavy colas that are colorful and frosty. Fruity Pebbles OG produces rock-hard buds that display striking hues of purple and green. The flowers are decorated with lime-green and purple sugar leaves, bright-orange pistils, and milky-white resin glands. This variety is as beautiful as it is flavorful.
Animal Cookies is medium to tall in height, with thin, lanky stalks and small, resin-encrusted buds; however, this cultivar is somewhat more stout than most Cookies cuts. Animal Cookies develops fat, dark-green leaves that commonly turn violet when exposed to cold temperatures. Animal Cookies forms compact, lime-green buds that are adorned with fiery red pistils and hints of purple. The flowers are rock-hard and heavily coated in trichomes.
The Sweets is medium to tall in height, with long, lanky branches, and thick, emerald-green leaves. This variety produces medium-size colas that are glazed in a sugary coat of trichomes. Fruity Pebbles OG-dominant phenotypes may be somewhat taller and produce larger buds than the other plants.
Growing The Sweets
Fruity Pebbles OG is a hardy and easy-to-grow variety that is resilient to most pests and diseases. This variety is adaptable and can be grown both indoors and outdoors, using a variety of cultivation techniques. When grown outdoors, Fruity Pebbles OG thrives in a warm and dry environment. When provided with ample lighting and proper nutrition, this cultivar is capable of producing a large yield of high-quality buds.
In contrast, Animal Cookies is a finicky strain to cultivate, particularly for inexperienced growers. This variety is sensitive to environmental stresses, and requires regular pruning, a stable pH, and a moderate climate to reach its full potential.
The Sweets is a moderately easy strain to grow, and can withstand most environmental stressors; however, some Animal Cookies-dominant phenotypes may be more sensitive to environmental stress and nutritional deficiencies. The Sweets is an adaptable strain and can be grown indoors or outdoors if given a warm and dry climate.
Both Fruity Pebbles OG and Animal Cookies stretch significantly during the flowering period. Like its parents, The Sweets often stretches considerably during the early flowering period. Growers may wish to use high-stress or low-stress training methods such as topping, fimming, and super cropping, during the vegetative growth period. This will limit the stretch and boost the yield of The Sweets.
Pest & Disease Control
The Sweets is resistant to many pests and diseases; however, some Cookies-dominant phenotypes may be vulnerable to fungal infections. Growers can prevent powdery mildew, bud rot, and other fungal diseases by regularly pruning the leaves, offering plenty of air circulation in the grow room, and keeping the humidity level low. Foliar sprays such as water and apple cider vinegar concoctions can be used throughout the vegetative cycle to help prevent the spread of powdery mildew.
Due to its OG and Cookies ancestry, The Sweets thrives when provided with an abundance of calcium and magnesium. Growers can use a cal-mag supplement to feed the plants, or amend the growing medium with dry fertilizers such as crushed oyster shells, gypsum, or lime. Experienced growers typically use a pH meter when mixing nutrient solutions to ensure that the plants receive a consistent pH and can uptake the optimum amount of nutrients.
Harvesting & Curing The Sweets
Most phenotypes of The Sweets will be ready for harvest in nine weeks. The most common way to tell if the plants are ripe is by using a magnifying glass to look at the trichomes. When they turn milky white, with some displaying hues of amber, the plants are fully mature.
If The Sweets is harvested when the trichomes are clear, this strain typically produces an electrifying cerebral high. If it is harvested when the majority of the trichomes have turned amber, the high is usually more calming and body-numbing. Harvesting The Sweets at the correct time will help to ensure a large yield and maximum potency.
Roughly one to two weeks before harvest, growers usually start to flush the plants with plain, filtered water. This practice may improve the flavor of the buds by removing any fertilizers stored in the flowers.
To start the harvesting process, growers chop down the colas of the plants. They strip the fan leaves from the branches and then trim away the small sugar leaves encompassing the flowers. Manicuring will improve the bag appeal of the buds and make them smoother to smoke.
After the flowers have been manicured, the branches can be hung up to dry for three to six days. It may take longer to dry The Sweets’ buds, given their extreme frost and density. Growers know that the buds are dry when the branches snap rather than bend, and the flowers feel light and crispy.
Once the flowers have been dried, the final step is to cure them. Curing helps preserve the aroma, fragrance, and potency of the buds. To cure the buds, growers usually remove them from the branches, put them in glass jars, and keep the jars in a cool and dark place with low humidity. They open, or “burp,” the jars twice a day for a few days to prevent excess moisture from accumulating in the jars. After three days, growers burp the jars once a day for the next two weeks. After three to eight weeks in the jar, the buds have been cured and are ready to be smoked.
