Purple Punch x Animal Cookies
Holy Smoke just might be the Holy Grail of dessert cannabis strains. This feminized hybrid brings together two elite cannabis varieties—Purple Punch and Animal Cookies—to create a fiery Indica-dominant cultivar that offers striking colors, exotic dessert-themed flavors, and exceptional potency.
Purple Punch, the mother of Holy Smoke, is one of the most popular cannabis varieties in recent years, and for good reason. This legendary strain offers a large yield of frosty, colorful buds that are potent and highly aromatic. Animal Cookies, the other parent of Holy Smoke, is celebrated for its narcotic effects, exotic flavor, and outstanding bag appeal. By combining these two cultivars, Greenpoint Seeds has created Holy Smoke—a top-tier hybrid that combines the fruity flavor and stunning color of Purple Punch with the incredible density and resin production of Animal Cookies.
Holy Smoke Strain
The story of Purple Punch, the mother of Holy Smoke, starts with a classic variety known as Granddaddy Purple. In the early 2000s, Ken Estes, a well-known cannabis breeder and activist, set out to develop a strain that would provide relief from pain and insomnia. He was particularly fond of a variety known as Purple Urkle but thought that its yield was too small. Ken crossed this cultivar with a high-yielding strain known as Big Bud, dubbing the hybrid Granddaddy Purple in recognition of the striking purple hues of the leaves and buds.
Ken released Granddaddy Purple to the market in 2003, and it soon became popular among growers, breeders, and users. This cultivar since has won many awards and earned a reputation as one of the most potent, flavorful, and high-yielding purple strains on the market.
In the early 2010s, a group of Hawaiian breeders known as Supernova Gardens selected a standout male phenotype of Ken’s Granddaddy Purple and used this plant to pollinate the renowned Larry OG. Supernova named this hybrid Purple Punch, possibly because of its purple coloration and knockout effects.
Supernova gave a select cutting of Purple Punch to a grower nicknamed Budologist and, soon, several breeders were growing the strain. By the late 2010s, Purple Punch had reached celebrity status, and many popular dispensaries such as the Jungle Boys were carrying the strain. Today, Purple Punch is a favorite among medical and recreational users, who love its sweet, fruity flavor and calming effects.
Purple Punch Lineage
Purple Punch is believed to be a hybrid of Larry OG and Granddaddy Purple. Some growers believe that Larry OG, the mother of Purple Punch, is an original phenotype of OG Kush; however, it bears some differences from the original phenotype. Notably, Larry OG tends to produce a larger yield and thicker branches than most OGs produce. As a result, many believe that Larry OG is an S1 or a hybrid of OG Kush. Larry OG reportedly came from a group of bikers in Orange County, California, during the early 2000s.
Granddaddy Purple, the father of Purple Punch, is a hybrid of Purple Urkle and Big Bud. Many growers believe that Purple Urkle is a select phenotype of Mendocino Purps. Big Bud, the other parent of Granddaddy Purple, is believed to be a hybrid of Afghani, Haze, and Northern Lights.
Animal Cookies, a.k.a. Animal Crackers, is the other parent of Holy Smoke. Animal Cookies is an elite strain that was created by the Cookies Family. The Cookies Family is a well-known group of breeders that has created a multitude of renowned strains, including Girl Scout Cookies, Gelato 41, and Mochi.
To create Animal Cookies, the Cookies Family used their cut of Fire OG to pollinate the famous Girl Scout Cookies. The resulting hybrid—Animal Cookies—melds the unique aroma of Girl Scout Cookies with the rich flavor of Fire OG. This cultivar delivers a potent stone that may improve the mood and ease tension in the muscles. Its delectable flavor and potent high have made Animal Cookies a popular choice among consumers.
Animal Cookies Lineage
Animal Cookies, the other parent of Holy Smoke, is a cross of two elite cultivars—Girl Scout Cookies and Fire OG. The lineage of Girl Scout Cookies is hazy, but it is said to be a polyhybrid of Durban F1 and Florida OG.
Fire OG, the other parent of Animal Cookies, is believed to be an original phenotype of OG Kush, but some growers maintain that it is either an S1 or a hybrid of OG.
Holy Smoke Feminized Cannabis Seeds
Greenpoint Seeds pollinated the Purple Punch cut with the famous Animal Cookies. The resulting strain, Holy Smoke, exhibits the elite characteristics of Purple Punch and Animal Cookies. Some plants may offer the sweet flavor and relaxing effects of Purple Punch, and others may offer the narcotic stone and incredible resin production of Animal Cookies. Most Holy Smoke plants will present a blend of these traits.
Holy Smoke is an Indica-dominant feminized hybrid. Feminized seeds make it easy and efficient to grow high-quality cannabis. Approximately 99.9 percent of the seeds will produce all-female plants, meaning that growers won’t have to worry about male plants pollinating the females.
Holy Smoke Aroma
Purple Punch, the mother of Holy Smoke, is rich in terpenes, offering a powerful aroma that is sweet and fruity. The variety smells of grape candy, blueberry, and soda. When the buds are broken apart, notes of vanilla and herbs also emerge.
The other parent, Animal Cookies, offers a rich, sweet-and-sour scent that is one of a kind. The buds radiate notes of cookie dough, brown sugar, and cherry, blended with spicy hints of skunk, gasoline, and soil. Some users report that when they grind the flowers of Animal Cookies, undertones of pine emerge.
Holy Smoke combines the lip-smacking aroma of both parents. This variety smells of grape candy, blueberry, cookie dough, and cherry, mixed with notes of petrol, skunk, and soil. Some Purple Punch-dominant phenotypes may be fruiter, and others may take on the sweet-and-sour funk of Animal Cookies.
Holy Smoke Flavor
Holy Smoke brings together the mouthwatering flavors of Purple Punch and Animal Cookies. This variety tastes of grape candy, berry, cherry, and cookie dough, with hints of petrol, skunk, and soil. The rich, sweet-and-spicy flavor tends to linger on the tongue for several minutes. Some Purple Punch-dominant plants may taste sweeter and fruitier, and some Cookies-dominant plants may take on the flavor of cookie dough, cherry, and skunk. Most plants will offer a blend of these flavors.
Holy Smoke Effects
Purple Punch is a potent variety, containing between 18 percent and 20 percent THC. This cultivar offers a balanced high that can be felt in both the body and mind. The high begins with a cerebral rush of euphoria that may uplift the mood and reduce stress. This cerebral effect slowly shifts into a relaxing body stone that may ease muscle tension and pain. Users report that Purple Punch makes them feel relaxed and stress-free while they remain alert and functional.
Animal Cookies provides a deeply relaxing effect. This Indica-dominant variety delivers a powerful body stone that may relieve muscular tension and reduce pain. The high comes on quickly, elevating the mood, boosting the appetite, and relaxing the body. When consumed in excess, this strain may send even the most experienced users to bed.
Like its parents, Holy Smoke provides a potent and deeply relaxing stone. The high starts with a wave of positivity and inspiration, and gradually shifts into a soothing and body-numbing stone. This variety makes for an excellent evening or nighttime smoke.
Holy Smoke Structure
Purple Punch is of medium height, with robust branches and thick, emerald-green leaves. This variety forms large, heavy colas that are caked in resin. The buds are fluffy but dense, sporting purple sugar leaves, orange pistils, and a thick coating of trichomes. When exposed to cold temperatures, Purple Punch may display hues of purple in the leaves and buds.
Animal Cookies is medium to tall in height, with long, thin branches and forest-green leaves. The leaves often display hues of purple and red as the plants mature. Animal Cookies forms bright-green, popcorn-size buds that are dappled with purple sugar leaves and red-orange pistils.
Holy Smoke is of medium height, with long branches that have moderate internodal spacing. This cultivar forms wide, dark-green leaves, many of which display thick rails of resin. Holy Smoke produces medium-size colas that are caked in resin. The flowers are dense and feature purple sugar leaves and orange pistils. Like the leaves and flowers of its parents, the leaves and flowers of Holy Smoke may display hues of violet when exposed to cold temperatures.
Growing Holy Smoke
Purple Punch is a hardy and easy-to-grow cultivar. The strain is resistant to most pests, diseases, and environmental stressors, and can thrive both indoors and outdoors. When grown outdoors, Purple Punch favors a warm climate with moderate humidity.
Animal Cookies is a challenging strain to cultivate, especially for inexperienced growers. This strain may be negatively impacted by changes in temperature, pH, and other environmental stresses. To reach its full potential, Animal Cookies requires a highly controlled environment, with a stable pH, adequate nutrition, and ample lighting.
Holy Smoke is easier to grow than most Cookies varieties and is resistant to most pests and diseases. This variety is adaptable and can thrive both indoors and outdoors. However, some Animal Cookies-dominant phenotypes may be more sensitive to environmental stresses.
Some Cookies-dominant phenotypes of Holy Smoke may stretch in height substantially during the early flowering period. Growers can limit the vertical stretch and increase the lateral branching by using high-stress and low-stress training methods. Holy Smoke responds well to topping, fimming, and super cropping.
Pest & Disease Control
Although Purple Punch is resistant to most pests, it is somewhat susceptible to caterpillars. Growers can prevent caterpillar infestations by using beneficial insects, barrier fabrics, and foliar sprays such as neem oil.
Some Cookies-dominant plants may be susceptible to infections of powdery mildew. Growers can thwart fungal diseases by thinning the canopy, providing sufficient lighting and airflow, and lowering the humidity level. They can also use foliar sprays such as water and apple cider vinegar solutions during the vegetative growth period.
The extreme density and frost of the buds may make Holy Smoke plants susceptible to bud rot. Growers can prevent bud rot by gently pruning the plants, providing lots of ventilation, and keeping the humidity level below 50 percent during the flowering stage.
Like most Cookies strains, Holy Smoke requires an ample supply of calcium and magnesium. Growers can prevent micronutrient deficiencies by using a cal-mag supplement or amending the soil with Epsom salt, gypsum, and dolomite lime. Because some Holy Smoke plants may be sensitive to pH changes, growers should always use a pH meter when mixing the nutrient solutions.
Harvesting & Curing Holy Smoke
Most Holy Smoke plants reach maturity in nine weeks, but some phenotypes may take ten weeks to ripen fully. The most effective way to determine if the plants are ripe is to examine the trichomes with a jeweler’s loupe. When the resin glands have turned white, the plants are fully mature. If the plants are harvested when the trichomes are clear, Holy Smoke may produce a more invigorating high. If the plants are harvested when the trichomes have turned amber, the effects may be more Indica-like.
A couple of weeks before harvest, most growers discontinue the use of nutrients and flush the plants with distilled water. This practice may improve the flavor and overall quality of the buds. After flushing the plants, the leaves typically fade from green to yellow.
Growers begin the harvesting process by cutting down the colas of the plants. Next, they remove the fan leaves and trim the buds. The trim can be used to make tinctures, hash, and other high-THC products.
Once the flowers have been manicured, they are ready to be dried; however, some growers prefer to manicure the flowers after drying them. To dry the buds, growers hang the up branches for up to one week. It may take longer to dry Holy Smoke, given the thickness of the buds. Growers know the plants are thoroughly dry when the stems snap rather than bend.
Once the flowers have been dried, they can be cured. The curing process helps to bring out the aroma and flavor of the buds. To cure the flowers, growers place them in glass jars, and store the jars in a cool, dry, and dark place. Opening the jars once or twice a day will help speed up the curing process. After two to four weeks, the buds can be smoked; however, it may take a longer period of time to properly cure them.
